The private sector has committed Sh6 billion to Kenya's national tree growing initiative, underscoring its role in advancing environmental sustainability through public-private partnerships. This contribution aligns with efforts to increase forest cover and address climate change challenges.
During the launch of the accelerated tree planting campaign at State House Nairobi on May 27, 2022, Kenya Private Sector Alliance CEO Carole Kariuki emphasized the business community's commitment to collaborating with the government on climate solutions. She highlighted the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's leadership in achieving at least 10% tree and forest cover, noting current levels stand at 12% and 8.8% respectively.
President Uhuru Kenyatta stated the government prioritizes environmental protection as part of its economic development strategy, aiming to raise Kenya's forest cover to 30% by 2050. He praised the progress made through multi-stakeholder efforts and reiterated Kenya's dedication to climate action, particularly ahead of the Stockholm+50 conference.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko cited data showing Kenya's forest cover declined from 7.2% in 2013 to 5.9% in 2018 before rebounding through partnership-driven initiatives. He credited current 8.8% forest cover and 12.13% tree cover to collaborative efforts across sectors.
