On February 14, 2014, a photojournalist from the Daily Nation captured a young woman undergoing an Alcoblow test on Muthithi Road in Westlands, Nairobi. The photo was taken without her consent, and despite testing negative, the Daily Nation has continued to use it in anti-drink driving stories.
The woman, who has been referred to as Miss Soba to protect her identity, claims that her privacy rights have been violated and demands that the photo be removed from the stories and deleted from the Daily Nation's database.
Responding to the issue, readers have overwhelmingly called for the photo to be removed, with many expressing their outrage and disappointment at the Daily Nation's actions.
As one reader, John Maina Thuo, pointed out, 'You've caused her distress for years. NMG should apologise to her.' Another reader, Moses Mutembei, suggested that the photo should be removed 'like yesterday'.
Some readers have also questioned the Daily Nation's decision to continue using the photo, even after Miss Soba had expressed her concerns. 'Continuing to use it in unrelated stories even after she has expressed that she feels violated is unethical and immoral,' said one reader.
On a related note, readers have also expressed their disappointment with the Daily Nation's corrections policy, with some accusing the newspaper of laziness in checking facts.
Finally, readers have praised the Daily Nation's new layout for the letters page, but some have expressed concerns that the page has become more competitive for writers.
