The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has approved Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula to contest the August 9 general election under the Ford Kenya banner, clearing the way for him to prioritize national campaigns for Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto.
Wetang’ula announced the decision during a campaign event in Bungoma, stating that Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka and Ford Kenya officials would manage local Kenya Kwanza operations in the region. "We have cleared this step and I will now move to focus on the national campaigns for our Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate Dr William Ruto," he said.
The senator emphasized his commitment to the coalition, noting that Ford Kenya retains significant representation in the national government. "The 30 percent we have shared as the Mulembe Nation in Kenya Kwanza government is intact. We shall have 22 ministers where Ford Kenya shall have three cabinet secretaries and ANC another three, including permanent secretaries and ambassadors," he explained.
Wetang’ula addressed concerns about political tensions, asserting that Bungoma remains firmly within Kenya Kwanza's influence. "Yesterday you all saw the Azimio team walking in Bungoma stressed with no one to listen to them. They should know that Bungoma is fully under Kenya Kwanza," he said.
The senator is set to face challengers including ODM's Lawrence Sifuna, DAP-K's Charles Ngome, UDP's Rev Herman Kasili, and independent candidate Jacob Machacha in the Senate race.
