Mombasa gubernatorial candidate Mike Sonko publicly requested forgiveness in May 2022, addressing political figures during a campaign event while facing legal challenges and opposition.
The former Nairobi governor emphasized the need for peaceful elections, urging leaders to promote respect among contestants and avoid abuses during the campaign. His remarks came amid ongoing legal battles, including corruption charges and a separate allegation of being a deadbeat father, which he denies.
Sonko highlighted his intention to prevent a recurrence of the 2007-2008 post-election violence, calling on Mombasa residents to maintain peace. His candidacy faces hurdles including opposition from the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Chief Justice, and activist groups.
Despite his apology, Sonko remains under impeachment proceedings from his tenure as Nairobi governor. The statement followed Deputy President William Ruto's recent plea for forgiveness from President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kenyans, where Ruto expressed regret over his tenure and sought reconciliation.
