Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has been accused of sidelining Pwani region interests by aligning with the Azimio La Umoja coalition led by Deputy President William Ruto, according to local officials.
Regional leaders including Kilifi County Council Chairperson Hassan Joho, Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi, and MP Teddy Mwambire alleged Kingi's actions harm Pwani's development. Joho specifically criticized Kingi's alleged betrayal of Raila Odinga's ODM party to join Ruto's coalition.
Kingi's decision to join Azimio La Umoja while maintaining ties to the Pamoja African Alliance sparked controversy. Joho stated, 'It's unacceptable to prioritize personal gain over regional needs. Leaders must represent their people, not serve as pawns in political games.'
The dispute includes allegations of land misuse, with Ruto accused of securing 2,536 acres in Taita-Taveta County. Saburi questioned the allocation, citing a history of land disputes involving former Taveta MP Basil Criticos.
Joho emphasized Pwani's need for independent leadership, stating, 'We must choose leaders who fight for our interests, not those who align with national agendas at our expense.' The governor's political strategy is seen as critical for the 2027 elections, with regional leaders pushing for stronger local representation.
