The Swedish film Triangle of Sadness, directed by Ruben Ostlund, has been awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, cementing the director’s reputation as a provocative cinematic voice. This marks Ostlund’s second Palme d’Or win, following his 2017 triumph for The Square.
Exploring themes of beauty, privilege, and societal hierarchies, the film follows two models stranded on a luxury cruise who face survival challenges alongside billionaire guests and crew. A low-ranking crew member emerges as the most capable survivor, upending traditional power dynamics.
Ostlund stated, "Our primary goal was to create an engaging film that sparks reflection, aiming to entertain while prompting audiences to question societal norms." The director’s previous Palme d’Or win in 2017 came for The Square, a satire about a prestigious art curator.
