Businessman Humphrey Kariuki's Sh41 billion tax evasion case has hit a snag as prosecutors require more time to compile and supply witness statements to the defence.

When the parties appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku on September 26, 2019, the prosecution said it needed 21 more days to complete the task.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Vincent Monda explained that the documents sought were in large volumes, and they had already provided some statements to Kariuki's defence team.

However, defence lawyers Kioko Kilukumi and Cecil Miller expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the prosecution, stating that they were only supplied with 27 witness statements and 23 exhibits on September 4.

They argued that the inventory indicated more documents were still to be supplied, and they wanted the prosecution to provide all the witness statements and other documents by September 20.

Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku directed the prosecution to comply and the two files on the case to be placed before her on September 26, 2019.
