Mlami Mwitu, a UK-based TikToker known as the Reverend Dad, revealed in a 2022 interview that his decision to move to Kenya originated from a 2012 article about identifying Kenyans, which his mother used to persuade him to relocate.
Speaking to Mpasho.Co.Ke, Mwitu described his initial resistance to leaving the UK. 'I grew up in the UK and came to Kenya at 19, then relocated here at 21,' he said. 'My mum told me I had to because I was giving her trouble. She bought me my ticket. I was supposed to stay for three months but felt at home within three weeks.'
The psychological counselor admitted struggling with the Luhya language, calling it 'a tongue twister' compared to other regional languages. 'If I were to learn a Kenyan language, I'd choose Luo,' he said. 'My mother isn't bothered by my accent, but my father, who speaks fluent English, finds it amusing.'
Mwitu's 2018 video sparked online debates about his Luhya heritage. 'I never knew I had a Luhya accent until my video went viral. The Luhya life chose me,' he reflected. He currently resides in Eldoret but occasionally visits Kanairo.
