On August 17, 2019, Doris Wako and Bernard Levy Mwato exchanged vows at Our Lady of Grace and Compassion Primary School in Mundika, Busia County, marking the culmination of 21 years of love and devotion.
The couple, both in their 30s, had met in high school and had been inseparable ever since. Their wedding was a colorful celebration attended by friends and family, with a special touch - Doris had invited street children to join in the festivities and share a meal with the guests.
Just two weeks later, on August 31, 2019, tragedy struck. Bernard had visited his uncle's home in Funyula to collect a wedding gift when he suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to Busia County Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The news was devastating for Doris, who had only just begun her life with her husband. 'Rest in peace my love, till we meet again,' she posted on Facebook, accompanied by a photo from their wedding day.
Friends and family were shocked and grief-stricken by the news, with many expressing their condolences on Doris's social media timeline. 'That's too soon Levy. May the good God comfort and be with you in this trying moment,' wrote Fredrick Magero. Walter Langat posted, 'My heartfelt condolences to you and the entire family. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Be encouraged.'
Busia Woman Representative Florence Mutua praised Doris for her kindness, saying she was among 21 women honored in March 2019 for their role in helping the less privileged in society.
A post-mortem is being conducted to determine the cause of Bernard's death, with a heart attack suspected.
