On August 25, 2019, Mercyline Ongachi, a 20-year-old first-time mother, was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital in Kayole after experiencing premature labor.

Accompanied by a nurse and her two sisters in an ambulance, Mercyline was admitted to the hospital and taken to a ward, but was left unattended to, according to a human rights group pursuing her case.

Despite calling for help, Mercyline delivered the first boy alone, and it was only after minutes of screaming that a health worker attended to her.

However, the health worker, who was unaware that Mercyline was expecting twins, moved in to help deliver the second baby, but allegedly decided not to place the infants in an incubator, instead placing them in a carton box without attempting to save their lives.

The hospital is also accused of misplacing Mercyline's documents, forcing her to stay overnight.

Amnesty International has written to the hospital administration and national and county governments to demand an investigation into the death of the twins.

Dr. Musa Mohammed, the medical superintendent at Mama Lucy Hospital, declined to comment on the matter.
