On September 5, 2019, the Kenyan film industry witnessed a milestone moment with the country's inaugural National Scriptwriting Competition gala night.

The event, which was a collaboration between the Kenya Film Commission, Kenya Film School, and the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology, aimed to promote and develop the local film industry.

The competition, which was announced earlier in the year, attracted 549 submissions from across the country. A jury of seven, comprising active participants in the film industry, shortlisted 20 scripts, and the winners were announced at the gala night.

The grand prize winner, Benjamin Odiwour, took home Sh1 million for his film 'Dust in my Eyes.' The first runner-up, Cyrus Kilavu, received Sh500,000 for his film 'Ndundi,' while the second runner-up, Ken Nderitu, bagged Sh300,000 for his film 'Crossing the Tsavo.'

The event was attended by the ICT Cabinet Secretary, Joe Mucheru, and Victoria Goro, Deputy Director of the Kenya Film School, who announced the winners.
