On September 5, 2019, Nairobi County began implementing an electronic payment system for clamping charges, marking a significant shift towards digital payment processing.
The new system, which was first trialed in July, enables motorists to pay clamping penalties electronically, reducing the need for physical interactions with parking attendants.
Nairobi County Director of Parking Services Tom Tinega explained that over 500 smartphones had been distributed to parking attendants to facilitate the process.
"We have handed out the gadgets and everything is now working according to plan. We want to ensure that every part of the city is fully digitised to make the payment system more effective," said Mr. Tinega.
Under the new system, motorists can dial 235# to make payments and receive notifications when their clamped vehicle has been released.
Mr. Tinega emphasized that every payment to the county government is now captured in the new system, which includes all major City Hall revenue streams.
