Harambee Stars Captaincy: Olunga Replaces Wanyama Ahead of Uganda Clash ¶
Michael Olunga has been named Harambee Stars captain ahead of the friendly match against Uganda Cranes on September 8, replacing Victor Wanyama who is nursing an injury.
Olga Michael, a striker for Kashiwa Reysol in Japan, has been handed the captain's armband by new coach Francis Kimanzi, who took over after Sebastien Migne's departure.
The match will be the first under Kimanzi's leadership, and it will be played at the Kasarani Stadium, a venue that will host the international friendly between the two East African neighbors.
Defender Joash Onyango, who was named the Best Player of the Year, has been named as Olunga's deputy.
However, Kimanzi faces a challenge with several key players nursing injuries, including Wanyama, Johanna Omollo, Joseph Okumu, Ismael Gonzalez, and Jesse Were, who is based in Zambia.
“If you don’t have a designated captain, you have to choose a player with experience among many, and Olunga has risen to the top,” Kimanzi told Goal.
“Olunga will lead the team, and I know with his experience, he will do a great job,” he added.
It remains to be seen how the team will perform under Olunga's leadership, but one thing is certain - the match against Uganda will be a test of Harambee Stars' strength and resilience.
