On September 5, 2019, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) took swift action against a reckless matatu driver who was caught on camera texting on his phone while driving at high speed.
The driver, who works for 2NK Sacco, was photographed endangering the lives of his passengers by checking his phone behind the wheel while doing over 80kph on a highway.
NTSA suspended the driver's driving license and revoked his Public Service Vehicle (PSV) license. The authority also withdrew the driver's PSV badge and demanded that he undergo a retest to assess his competencies.
Furthermore, NTSA ordered 2NK Sacco to remove the driver's name from their portal and take responsibility for organizing a road safety sensitization program for the sacco management, all drivers, and conductors within seven days.
"The use of mobile phones is a distraction. It takes the driver's eyes off the road, making it harder to navigate bends and respond to hazards," NTSA stated via Facebook.
