Wydad Casablanca advanced to the 2022 CAF Champions League final after drawing 1-1 with Angolan side Petro Luanda in the second leg of their semi-final on Friday, securing a 4-2 aggregate win.
The Moroccan club had previously defeated Petro 3-1 in the first leg in Luanda, setting up a final clash against either Egypt's Al Ahly or Algeria's Entente Setif. Al Ahly leads 4-0 from their first-leg match in Algiers.
The final, originally scheduled in Morocco, faces potential relocation after Al Ahly appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, citing concerns over impartiality.
Petro took an early lead in the second leg through Brazilian forward Gleison Moreira in the 21st minute, but Amine Farhane equalized seven minutes later. Despite controlling possession in the second half, Petro failed to score again, with substitute Erico Castro hitting the woodwork in stoppage time.
Tensions flared during the match, resulting in four Wydad and three Petro players receiving yellow cards. Petro's Adriano Yano was shown a red card after the final whistle for dissent.
Petro Luanda, making their first semi-final appearance since 2001, needed three goals to overturn the deficit but fell short despite an attacking approach. Wydad's defensive resilience ensured their progression to the May 30 final.
