On September 5, 2019, the Kenyan Cabinet made a significant decision regarding the Mau Forest, a critical water tower that feeds the country's major rivers.

Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna announced that the Cabinet had approved the relocation of families from the Mau area, stating that the government would relocate families living in Mt Kenya and the Aberdare forest.

Mr. Oguna emphasized that the relocation was necessary to save the country, but would be carried out in a humane manner, upholding the dignity of the people involved.

The move comes after Rift Valley leaders, led by Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, accused Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko of having vested interests in the eviction of those living in Mau.

Mr. Oguna urged those who spoke of insubordination to appreciate the government processes, stating that evictions were not a new phenomenon and that due processes were always followed.
