Striker Jesse Were, who plays for Zesco United in Zambia, has expressed his gratitude towards former Harambee Stars coach Sebastien Migne for the opportunity to represent Kenya at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Were was recalled to the national team by new coach Francis Kimanzi for an international friendly match against Uganda on Sunday, despite being left out of the final squad in June.
Were, who was the Golden Boot winner in the 2015 season while playing for Tusker, says he appreciates the fact that Migne had a difficult time choosing the final squad and that the snub motivated him to work harder.
"I had hoped to represent my country in Egypt, but unfortunately, that did not happen. I know the coach had a very hard time choosing the final squad, and therefore, I didn’t really carry hard feelings," Were said.
Were is, however, doubtful for the Uganda match due to a hamstring injury he picked up in Zesco’s first league match last Saturday.
"I am working with the physio, and hopefully, I will be ready for the game on Sunday," Were said.
Kimanzi expressed his joy at having Were back in the team, citing his experience and the importance of unity and chemistry in building a team for the future.
Kenya is using the match against Uganda as preparations for the 2021 Afcon qualifiers, where they have been pooled alongside Comoros, Egypt, and Togo. Were believes it is possible for Kenya to pull through, citing Egypt’s recent defeat at the hands of Algeria.
