German media outlets reported Monday that Borussia Dortmund's top striker Erling Haaland is close to completing a transfer to Manchester City, with the Premier League club reportedly engaging with Dortmund over the player's release clause.
The 21-year-old Norwegian forward has scored 61 goals in 66 Bundesliga appearances since joining Dortmund in 2020, making him a highly sought-after asset. Multiple top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Paris St Germain, had previously shown interest in the striker.
Sky Germany cited sources indicating Haaland has communicated his desire to leave Dortmund, while Bild and Kicker magazines reported potential deal closure in the coming days. Dortmund remained silent on the matter, though sports director Sebastian Kehl emphasized the club's need for clarity this week.
Manchester City's pursuit of Haaland drew comments from Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who acknowledged the transfer would elevate competitive stakes. "If Erling Haaland goes there, that will not weaken them. Definitely not," Klopp stated. "It's about us and what we can make of it." Klopp, whose contract expires in 2026, noted City's continued development under its ownership.
Dortmund is exploring alternatives, with Salzburg forward Karim Adeyemi identified as a potential replacement for Haaland.
