Published on September 5, 2019, the Chemususu Half Marathon aims to conserve water catchment areas feeding into the Chemususu Dam, a multibillion project.

The 1992 Olympics 3,000m steeplechase Gold medallist Mathew Birir, now the Race Director, has announced that the event will support water conservation efforts in the region.

Birir, who conducted a day-long survey of the route, said the event will start at Kaburandi along Maji-Eldama Ravine Rd and finish at the shores of Chemususu Dam.

Over 500 athletes, including World record holder Denis Kimetto, are expected to participate in the event, with Kimetto using the race to prepare for the New York Marathon.

"We expect more stellar athletes from Iten preparing for various cities marathon to participate," said Birir, accompanied by Lembus council of elders member and chairman of the Marathon Albert Chemitei.

The winners of the event will receive Sh250,000 in prize money.

The Chemusu Dam sits on 220,000 hectares of the indigenous Lembus Forest.
