September 5, 2019 - Millions of lesser flamingos have made their way back to Lake Bogoria in Kenya, creating a breathtaking spectacle for locals and tourists alike.
The pink birds, which are known for their unique feeding habits, have returned to the lake after a breeding season in Tanzania. Their breeding season typically takes place between December and March, after which the adults give the young ones time to mature before migrating back to Nakuru.
Interestingly, the lesser flamingos are not naturally pink. They are born with grey feathers, which gradually turn pink due to their diet rich in algae, larvae, and brine shrimp.
Locals have a rich history attached to Lake Bogoria and are supporting conservation efforts to protect the flamingos and their habitat.
The lake is home to the highest concentration of true geysers in Africa, and the flamingos can be seen drinking water from the springs and geysers at the lake's edges.
Fun fact: The lesser flamingo is the smallest species of flamingo, although it is tall and large by bird standards.
