Award-winning comedian Eric Omondi has announced a two-month hiatus from the entertainment industry, claiming the break is necessary to 'strategise on the future of East African Entertainment industry' while criticizing other artists for 'sleeping on their jobs.' The move comes amid ongoing debates about his previous efforts to influence Kenyan entertainment policy.
Omondi's Criticism Of Industry Peers ¶
In social media posts, Omondi compared his planned absence to a 'well-deserved two months break' for political leaders, noting that 'since November 17th of 2020, the President has been on it day and night for almost 2 years.' He claimed the entertainment industry has become 'painfully, awkwardly and extremely quiet' since his brief absence, suggesting it relies 'on one single man.'
"It is sad that an entire industry relies on one single man. Since I took the small break, the whole industry has been painfully, awkwardly and extremely quiet... There is literally nothing going on in this industry now..."
Omondi's announcement follows his 2022 efforts to push for legislation requiring 75% local content in entertainment, which he presented to Parliament. The comedian has previously clashed with figures like MCSK boss Ezekiel Mutua over industry practices.
