On August 24, 2019, Stephen Obura was reported missing by his family members, prompting a police search that lasted for weeks.

According to Nyando Police Boss Leonard Matete, the police, with the help of area chief Nick Opondo, visited the home of an ex-convict in Kobura Village, Nyando Sub-county, on a tip that the deceased had a fight with the suspect.

Matete said police raided the suspect's home, where they noticed a foul smell leading them to an abandoned hole within the compound.

When the police presence was noticed, the ex-convict fled, but the police dug up the hole and found the body parts, which were later identified as those of Obura.

Area residents told the police that the two men had a fight sometime back, but no one suspected it would lead to a death.
