Published on September 5, 2019, former Auditor General Edward Ouko has spoken out about feeling insecure after leaving office.
Ouko, who served as Kenya's first ever Auditor General, revealed in an interview that he felt more secure while in office than he does now.
“Anyone who had an ill motive would never have manifested it during my tenure because they know I have security but when you leave without clear post-service arrangements…it’s the most insecure time am most concerned about after the office,” said Ouko.
He noted that there is no security arrangement in place for the Auditor General after leaving office, and called for a change to ensure the position is safe.
Ouko also addressed reports of threats he received while in office, stating that they never worried him due to his defined security detail.
“That never worried me, in fact it worried my family more than myself… For family, they take it with a bit more seriousness,” said Ouko.
Additionally, Ouko denied reports of a strained relationship with President Uhuru Kenyatta, insisting that the Auditor General's office is independent and free from interference.
However, he expressed regret over the lack of action taken on his reports, citing the need for synchronization of systems to address corruption.
