On September 4, 2019, Mombasa tycoon Ali Punjani, who is being sought by police over drug trafficking, filed an anticipatory bail petition in the High Court.
According to reports, Mr. Punjani, who is currently out of the country, made the application through his lawyer Jared Magolo.
Mr. Punjani had been admitted to the Asian Heart Institute in India early last month for an open-heart surgery, and was expected to return to the country last week.
However, he failed to return, and Mombasa police had stated that upon his arrival, he would be arrested for interrogation.
Outgoing Mombasa police boss Johnston Ipara had maintained that Mr. Punjani remains a drug trafficking suspect, and that they believe he is directly or indirectly involved in the narcotics trade.
Mr. Ipara had also stated that they had found several cheques, title deeds, and over Sh63,000 in cash during their crackdown, which they believe are linked to Mr. Punjani's wealth.
