On September 4, 2019, tycoon Ali Badrudin Punjani, suspected of involvement in drug trafficking, filed an application for bail to prevent his arrest upon arrival in Kenya.
According to the application, Mr. Punjani had been scheduled to return on August 26 but was forced to delay due to medical reasons. He is now expected to return at any time.
Mr. Punjani's lawyer, Jared Magolo, argued in the application that no charges had been preferred against his client, and that the police had provided no reason for the threatened arrest.
Mr. Magolo further stated that Mr. Punjani's premises had been searched, but nothing incriminating was found. The officers did, however, take several of Mr. Punjani's documents, including a title deed and bank books.
The application was filed at the High Court in Mombasa, naming the Inspector General of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions as respondents.
