Uasin Gishu County has made history by becoming the first to pass Ekuru Aukot's Punguza Mzigo bill, a move that has been hailed as a significant step towards reducing the cost of living for Kenyans.
On September 3, 2019, the county assembly voted in favor of the bill after a thorough discussion and public participation.
Ekuru Aukot, the brain behind the Punguza Mzigo bill, expressed his gratitude to the county assembly for passing the bill, saying it was a beacon of hope for the country's future.
"Thank you, people of Uasin Gishu, for passing the Punguza Mzigo bill. This is a sign that change is possible, even for the smallest in society. You are heroes," Aukot said.
The bill has been welcomed by the county's MCAs, who argue that it will reduce the cost of living for Kenyans by eliminating unnecessary positions and reducing the salaries of top officials.
However, the bill has also faced opposition, with some lawmakers vowing to block its passage in the national assembly.
It is worth noting that the Punguza Mzigo bill has been criticized for its similarities with the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), which was also aimed at reforming the country's constitution.
