A 30-year-old woman from Kiptaldal village in Waldai Ward, Belgut, is being held at Sosiot Police Station for allegedly stabbing her 10-year-old daughter to death.
The victim, a Standard Four pupil at Arise and Shine Academy, was preparing to report to school for the third term when the incident occurred.
Belgut OCPD Phillip Okello said the minor suffered several stab wounds inflicted with a kitchen knife during the mid-morning incident.
"The young victim was rushed to Kericho District Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries," said Mr Okello.
The motive behind the suspect's decision to kill her daughter remains unclear, with the suspect refusing to talk to police or her relatives.
Okello said the suspect was arrested and handed over to the police by her neighbours who responded to distress calls from the suspect's relatives.
The body was moved to Kericho County Hospital mortuary.
