On September 4, 2019, Foreign Affairs CS Monica Juma condemned xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which had already begun on Sunday.

According to CS Juma, the attacks targeted non-nationals in several places in South Africa, and she welcomed the strong condemnation of these attacks by the Government of South Africa.

CS Juma expressed hope that the ethos and values of Pan Africanism would prevail over narrow nationalisms, and be the bonds that glue African brothers and sisters together.

She assured Kenyans that the High Commission was working closely with South Africa to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Police in Johannesburg reported that over 100 people had been arrested following the attacks.

Videos shared online showed hundreds of people marching through the Central Business District, looting and torching cars, with targeted shops reportedly owned by foreign nationals.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Kenya's envoy to South Africa Jean Kamau called for vigilance, stating that several Kenyan citizens had been affected by the recent spate of violence.
