On Wednesday, the 2019 Uganda Open Amateur Golf Championship got underway at the stunning Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort in Uganda. The event saw Kenya's elite amateur golfers make a strong start, with the top five positions on the leaderboard taken by Kenyans.
Leading the charge was Simon Njogu of the Great Rift Valley Golf Resort, who shot an impressive three under par 69. Njogu's round included an early birdie at the par five-second hole and two back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth holes, which carried him over two under par score to the back nine.
At the back nine, Njogu birdied the 11th and 13th but dropped a shot at the par four-18th hole. Thika Sports Club's Peter Mwangi Rimui also made a strong showing, with birdies on the first and second holes, but dropped shots at the third and sixth. He recovered well at the back nine, picking up birdies at the 13th, 17th, and at the home green.
Kenya Railway Golf Club's Samuel Njoroge finished the opening round in third place with a score of one over par 73, while Deaf golfer Isaac Makokha completed the top four with a score of two over par 74. A total of 19 Kenyan golfers, including five juniors, are participating in the event.
The second round of the men's edition will be played on Thursday, with the third and fourth rounds taking place on Friday and Saturday. The professional tournament is set to start on Monday next week, with registration and practice on the same day.
