Published on September 4, 2019, a video has been circulating on social media showing a woman telling Kikuyus in Molo to leave their land or risk being evicted. This has sparked outrage and rebuke from various quarters.
Nyeri MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has taken to Facebook to express his concerns and disappointment at the DP's Rift Valley allies for using evictions as a threat against the Kikuyu community. He questioned what made them think they could evict Kikuyus from the Rift Valley.
MP Wambugu also mentioned that the statements made by the woman in the video are being echoed by other Kalenjin MPs, including Belgut MP Nelson Koech, who said 'people will soon begin thinking it's okay to evict their neighbors who are not natives even if they have land documents.'
'I got the video below yesterday. I was clear it's not the kind of thing I can share publicly based on how dangerous the statements this lady is making are. But I was also extremely concerned that those listening to her actually cheered her on,' MP Wambugu said on his Facebook post.
He emphasized that the country needs to deal with the impression that exists in sections of the Kalenjin community and leadership that whenever Kalenjins are unhappy with a particular political or government decision, they can (violently) evict Kikuyus from the Rift Valley.
'This idea was behind the violence we saw in 2007. 2007 must be the last time something like that happens – na si tafadhali. There's absolutely no way it will ever happen again,' he charged.
MP Wambugu also called out Kikuyu MPs in the Rift Valley who 'continue to worship the ground the DP walks on' urging them to step up and speak out against the divisive utterances which have a potential of leading the country to bloodbath.
