On September 4, 2019, a man claiming to be from Safaricom called a Nyakundi Report reader, demanding personal details in a bid to scam him.
The caller, who identified himself as Ephanstus from Safaricom, called the reader at around 11:15am and asked for information about his Safaricom line.
He asked the reader if he had replaced his SIM card recently and if he had a green card from Safaricom. The reader, however, was suspicious and gave the caller a fake ID number.
The caller continued to ask for more information, including the serial number of the SIM card and the PIN numbers. He even claimed to be able to see the reader's location in Nairobi using his 'system.'
When the reader tried to call him back, the caller had blocked the number, which was identified as 'Vincent Plumber' on Truecaller.
It turned out that the caller had also contacted six other colleagues in the office, asking them for similar details.
When the reader reported the incident to Safaricom Customer Care, they were told that the names were not confidential and that their details were already in the system.
However, Safaricom's 2019 Sustainability Report revealed that 78 members of staff underwent a disciplinary process to deal with issues of corruption, including breach of policy, negligence, and asset misappropriation.
