On September 4, 2019, a wave of xenophobic attacks swept through South Africa, targeting foreign-owned businesses and leaving several people dead.

Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu and his teammates Leon Balogun and John Ogu were among those who condemned the violence, calling for an end to xenophobia and unity among Africans.

Kanu posted a poignant message on Instagram, quoting Nelson Mandela's words: 'No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.'

He added: 'AFRICA AFRICANS LOVE is ALL #onelove Let love lead! #africa #world #love #nigeria #leadership #southafrica.'

Balogun tweeted: 'Together we stand, divided we fall! I’m praying for UNITY #SayNoToXenophobia #WeAreOne.'

Ogu also spoke out against the violence, tweeting: 'This is totally unaccepted. Say no to xenophobia.'

South African police arrested over 80 people and confirmed five deaths as the violence intensified, with roving groups attacking and looting foreign-owned shops.
