On September 4, 2019, a controversy surrounding MacDonald Mariga's candidacy in the Kibra by-election came to light, with his father Noah Wanyama speaking out against his son's decision.
According to close family sources, Noah Wanyama, a former left-winger who played for AFC Leopards and the Kenyan national team Harambee Stars, was not impressed by the fact that his son was running on a Jubilee ticket as DP William Ruto's project.
Mariga's candidacy has been met with opposition from within Jubilee, with some leaders advancing the idea that he is not a registered voter and should be locked out of the election.
Morris Peter Kinyajui, who also sought to fly the Jubilee flag, made an appeal against Mariga, stating that the footballer was not a resident or a voter of Kibra constituency.
