Edward Ouko, Kenya's first Auditor General, has spoken out about his security concerns following his departure from office.
Speaking on Citizen TV's News Night show on Tuesday, September 4, 2019, Ouko expressed worry about his safety, stating that he felt more secure while in office but now he is concerned about his security.
“Anyone who had an ill motive would never have manifested it during my tenure because they know I have security but when you leave without a clear post-service arrangements…it’s the most insecure time am most concerned about after the office,” Ouko said.
Ouko, who left office a week ago, emphasized the need for a change in the security arrangement for the Auditor General to ensure their safety even after leaving office.
During his eight-year term, Ouko unearthed several scandals, including the Ksh.3.7 million expenditure to purchase dairy cows in Kisumu County and pending bills verification that revealed county debts in excess of Ksh.35 billion were either fake or did not meet the threshold for payment.
Ouko was appointed the Auditor-General on August 27, 2011, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (FCA) and a co-opted Council Member of the Institute representing Africa.
