Laikipia Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru publicly addressed a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly captured her hurling insults at former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri. The footage, which sparked widespread discussion, prompted Waruguru to clarify her statements on February 12, 2022.
Waruguru asserted she was misquoted and misunderstood in the exchange, which critics described as extreme and demeaning. Despite this, she refused to apologize for her remarks, stating the conflict stemmed from personal differences. She emphasized her stance would not change even if confronted in a legal setting.
The legislator also denied claims that Kiunjuri had introduced her to politics in 2013, questioning how he could have supported her nomination for County Assembly if his own 2013 gubernatorial bid failed. This revelation added tension to their ongoing rivalry.
The feud escalated when Kiunjuri hinted at contesting the Laikipia East parliamentary seat in August 2022. Waruguru responded by challenging him to enter the race, stating the competition would be between the two of them. "Leave alone the current Legislator Mohammed Amin and immediate former MP Mutahi Kimaru. The race will be between two horses, which are Waruguru and Kiunjuri," she declared.
Kiunjuri had previously been speculated as a potential running mate for Deputy President William Ruto, though he later shifted focus. As of February 2022, he had not publicly responded to Waruguru's remarks.
