On September 4, 2019, a court ordered the detention of two men, Josphat Jimmy Thuo and Elias Makanda Kiema, for seven days to allow for the completion of an investigation.
The suspects were accused of mimicking Asian businessmen to obtain money by false pretence from unsuspecting clients in various counties, including a police officer.
According to detective Daniel Mumbua, the two men used an Asian accent to win over their victims and were likely to be charged on several counts.
Additionally, the suspects were found in possession of narcotic plant material, but the certificate of weighing was yet to be obtained.
Further investigation was needed to obtain call data, M-Pesa transactions for the past 8 months, and record statements from various complainants, including a police officer who was admitted to the hospital with a fractured leg.
