On Tuesday, Serena Williams made history at the U.S. Open, securing her 100th win at the tournament with a convincing 6-1 6-0 victory over Wang Qiang.
Published on September 4, 2019, Williams' achievement marked a milestone in her illustrious career, joining Chris Evert as the only two players to log at least 100 victories at the tournament.
Williams, the eighth-seeded American, was in top form, firing off 25 winners and winning 90% of her first serve points. In contrast, Wang, the 18th-seed, was unable to save any of the five break point opportunities against her.
When asked about her performance, Williams reflected on her two decades of playing at Flushing Meadows, saying, "I never thought that I would get to 100. It's so special. I never want to let it go."
Williams will face fifth-seed Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals, a matchup she leads 4-1 in head-to-head. When asked about the upcoming matchup, Williams said, "She doesn't make a lot of mistakes. She's one of those players that does everything really well. So I have to do everything well, too."
