Located on the coast of Kenya, Kilifi is a hidden gem that has captivated the hearts of many travelers. As I reflect on my recent visit, I am reminded of the town's undeniable charm that keeps me coming back for more.
One of the reasons I love Kilifi is its affordability. The town has seen a rise in backpackers and informal accommodations on Air BnB, making it an ideal choice for budget travelers. My top pick for solo travelers is the Distant Relatives Eco-lodge and Backpackers, which offers a range of options and activities at an affordable price of Sh1000 per night.
As I arrived in Kilifi at 10 PM, the instant breeze from the ocean and the sound of the crashing waves on the creek below were a welcome respite from the day's journey. The scenic Bofa Road, with its beautiful beachfront homes, is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the town's laid-back atmosphere.
During my stay, I had the opportunity to try some of the local cuisine at Village Dishes, a restaurant located in the heart of the town. Their array of Coastal dishes, including puff pastry, kaimati, and pweza, are a must-try for anyone visiting Kilifi. Seafood is exceptionally cheap in the town, and I enjoyed a delicious meal of samaki na mchuzi wa nazi and wali wa nazi for Sh300.
One of the highlights of my trip was attending a party hosted by a local, where I had the opportunity to try oysters for the first time. The oysters were fresh and tasted great with a bit of lemon juice and chilli powder. I was also impressed by the town's nightlife, which offers a range of options for sundowners and live music events.
Whether you're looking for a relaxing getaway or an adventure-filled trip, Kilifi has something for everyone. So why not plan a trip to this hidden wonderland and experience its unique charm for yourself?
