On September 4, 2019, a US air strike in Somalia's Jilib region killed one Al-Shabaab fighter, the US Africa Command has confirmed.

According to Maj Gen William Gayler, director of operations Africom, the strike was part of the US's efforts to pressure terrorist networks in the region.

"We continue to place pressure on terrorist networks at the same time our Somali partners are making progress on the ground," General Gayler said.

He added that no civilian was injured or killed in the airstrike, which is a welcome development in the ongoing conflict.

The US army has stepped up its war of air strikes in Somalia since 2017, and this latest strike is part of that effort.
