Android 10: A New Era for Google's Mobile Operating System

On September 3, 2019, Google announced the rollout of Android 10, the latest version of its mobile operating system. This marks a significant milestone for Google, as it is the first time in 10 years that the mobile operating system doesn't have a dessert-themed name.

According to Google, the switch in name is aimed at being more globally inclusive. The company has also updated its official website with the new logo and more information about the next evolution of Android.

What to Expect from Android 10

Android 10 brings several new features and improvements, including gesture navigation, dark mode, and Live Captioning. Gesture navigation is a new way of navigating the operating system, which replaces the traditional back button with a side-swipe gesture. Dark mode is a system-wide feature that applies a dark theme to the user interface and specific apps.

Live Captioning is a new accessibility feature that applies text to prerecorded videos, such as those shared in messages. This feature relies on a local speech analyzer that recognizes speech on the device. Unfortunately, Live Captioning is only available on Pixel devices first and launches later this fall.

Other Notable Features

Android 10 also includes several other notable features, including a new approach to making security fixes available and a refreshed Play Store. The Play Store will now send privacy and security updates directly to users, rather than requiring them to wait for entire OS updates.

Additionally, Google's Digital Wellbeing initiative will expand, allowing parents to monitor and set limits on their children's screen time using Family Link.

Availability and Rollout

Android 10 is available for Google Pixel smartphones, and it will be rolled out to other devices in the coming months. However, not all smartphones will receive the update immediately, and users will need to wait for their carrier to roll it out.
