On September 4, 2019, the Uasin Gishu County Assembly made history by unanimously approving the Punguza Mizigo Initiative, a bill aimed at transforming the country's governance structure.
The assembly's Committee on Delegated Legislation had earlier endorsed the bill, which was tabled by Committee Chairperson Patrick Bundotich.
According to Mr. Bundotich, majority of the residents who participated in public forums across the 30 wards in the county were in support of the bill.
"In all public forums, residents were of the opinion that the bill is people-friendly," said Mr. Bundotich during the debate on the bill.
Langas Ward Representative Francis Muya seconded the motion, stating that the bill would boost development at the grassroots level.
The bill seeks to reduce the number of MPs, scrap the position of deputy governor, and introduce a one-term presidency of seven years.
It also aims to increase funds allocated to counties from 15% to 35%.
MCAs expressed their support for the bill, with Kiplome Ward Representative Ramadhan Ali (ODM) calling it "good news for devolution" and a "game changer at the grassroots".
