Embu Level Five Teaching and Referral Hospital, a neurosurgery hub in Mt Kenya and the country, is facing a setback after theatre equipment worth Sh500,000 went missing.

According to Embu County Police Commandant Daniel Rukunga, the theft was reported at the Embu Police Station and is being investigated as an inside job.

“It is suspected the theft was an inside job. Various people in the hospital have recorded statements with the sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigations," he said.

Mr Rukunga assured that investigations are ongoing and once complete, the person or people found culpable will be arrested and prosecuted.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora had recently stated that over 300 brain surgeries have been performed at the hospital since the modern equipment was installed two years ago.

However, the theft of the theatre equipment could derail such operations, putting the hospital's neurosurgery services at risk.
