Kenya's Gilberson and Page Trophy Campaign Begins with Third Place Finish

On September 3, 2019, Kenya's women's golf team wrapped up the first test match of the Gilberson and Page Trophy tournament at the Karen Country Club course, securing a third-place finish behind Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Kenya's Agnes Nyakio and Mercy Nyanchama made a strong start in the morning's foursomes, defeating Zambia 6-5 and Zimbabwe 3-1. However, the team's Esther Chumo and Margaret Njoki struggled, losing to both Zambia and Zimbabwe in the foursomes.

Kenya's Joyce Wanjiru and Wanjiru Karume showed resilience, winning 4-3 against Zambia but falling to Zimbabwe 3-2. The team's overall performance in the foursomes earned them six points against Zimbabwe's 10.

As the singles matches commenced, Zambia put up a strong fight, collecting 13 points, while Kenya managed eight points and Zimbabwe secured 15. Zambia finished the day with 15 points, narrowly edging out Kenya, who now face a tough encounter in the second test match on Friday at Sigona Golf Club.

Kenya's Chumo impressed in the singles, winning both her matches against Zambia (7-5) and Zimbabwe 6-4. However, the team's captain, Karume, lost to Zambia 2-1 and halved with Zimbabwe. Joyce Wanjiru halved with Zambia but fell to Zimbabwe, while Agnes Nyakio won 3-2 against Zambia but lost to Zimbabwe by the same margin. Mercy Nyanchama was beaten by both Zambia and Zimbabwe with scores of 6-5 each.
