Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has called on health facilities in the county to ensure that baby swapping cases become a thing of the past, following the resolution of a recent saga at Mama Lucy Hospital.
On September 2, 2019, DNA results from the Government chemist revealed that two infants at the center of the saga were not swapped. The results confirmed that Dorothy Kawira is indeed the mother of baby Kezia Makena, while Evalyne Ndinda is the mother of Evalyne Ndinda Musyoka.
The saga began when the two mothers were at odds, accusing each other of taking each other's child. However, the DNA investigation, conducted by a government agency, put an end to the confusion.
Dr. Musa Mohamed, the medical superintendent at Mama Lucy Hospital, stated that the DNA investigation was satisfactory and that the whole saga was brought about by a minor confusion.
Following the release of the report, the babies were reunited with their respective parents. The fathers, who were present at the facility on Tuesday morning, expressed their satisfaction with the entire process.
‘I appreciate the efforts because they responded immediately and all we want now is to go home,’ said Dancan Mberia, father to Kezia.
‘The tests were conducted well and we are happy that we can now go home as a family without any doubts,’ he added.
The two babies have been in good health throughout the process, thanks to a strict baby care program at the facility.
Nairobi County Health Executive Mohamed Dagane hailed the successful tests, noting that the county has beefed up surveillance at its major facilities to avoid any incidences of baby swapping and baby theft.
