Deputy President William Ruto made a high-profile visit to Kibra constituency on September 3, 2019, amidst growing political tensions in the area.

During his visit, Ruto presided over the opening of a 580-bed capacity dormitory at Moi Girls School, a project that has improved education infrastructure in the region.

While avoiding direct politics at the venue, Ruto hinted at his intention to campaign in the area ahead of the by-election slated for November 7, 2019.

"Today I came here for education matters but I want you to tell me the day you will be free so that I can come back and discuss politics," Ruto said in a statement.

The visit was seen as a strategic move by Ruto to test the waters ahead of the looming political showdown between his Jubilee party candidate and Raila Odinga's ODM.

Other candidates cleared to vie in the by-election include Eliud Owalo of Amani National Congress (ANC) and Mukhisa Butichi of FORD Kenya.
