Published on September 3, 2019, a recent assessment by the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) has awarded Pride Inn Paradise Hotel in Mombasa a five-star rating, making it the first hotel in the region to achieve this milestone.
The hotel, which opened in 2015, scored 80.2 per cent on the TRA's assessment index, with 100 per cent on essential items required by the East African Community grading procedure. It also scored 4,544 marks out of a possible 5,665 marks.
According to TRA Director General Kipkorir Langat, the assessment was conducted between June 9 and July 14 by East Africa Community Certified Assessors and supervised by the Standardization and Classification Committee of TRA.
"Pride Inn Paradise hotel was awarded five-star rating after it scored 100 per cent on essential items as required by EAC grading procedure. In addition, the hotel scored 4,544 marks out of possible 5,665 marks, which is 80.2 per cent for a five-star grading," Langat said.
The hotel's five-star rating is reflective of the advancement being made in the tourism industry. A recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) projects that 13 hotels will be opened in Kenya over the next five years, including additional units by Radisson, Marriot, and Best Western Brands.
The report also projects an increase in the number of available rooms from 20,100 in 2018 to 23,000 in 2023, with guest nights expected to total an estimated 4.6 million in 2023, marking a 3.4 per cent compound annual increase from 3.9 million in 2018.
Additionally, total room revenue is expected to expand by 7.4 per cent compounded annually, rising to Sh75.7 billion in 2023 from Sh52.9 billion in 2018.
