On September 3, 2019, the selection process for the Jubilee candidate in the Kibra seat sparked controversy when DP William Ruto allegedly installed footballer Mariga as the party's candidate.
According to the party's constitution, nominations should be conducted through open, fair, free, and transparent processes. However, the Elections Board was accused of overstepping its authority and disregarding these rules.
The axed aspirants claimed that Mariga is not a resident of Kibra Constituency and questioned whether he has ever voted or is a registered voter in the area. They also argued that Mariga's candidature would be difficult to sell compared to Ken Okoth, making it a near impossible task for the Jubilee party to win the seat.
The aspirants have since appealed against the party's decision, citing irregularities in the selection process.
