Published on September 3, 2019, Google Search trends for August 2019 revealed a mix of sports, entertainment, and financial topics that captured the attention of Kenyans.
The English Premier League (EPL) took the top position in the August search queries, with matches such as Liverpool vs Arsenal and Manchester United vs Chelsea being the most searched for.
Despite a government ban, betting remained a popular search query, with major betting sites like Bet 254, 22 Bet, Shabiki Power 17, and Odi Bet still being searched for online.
The death of popular benga musician John Ng'ang'a De'Mathew on August 18th was the third most searched query in August, following a fatal accident on Thika Superhighway.
Other trending search queries included the 11-year-old gymnast Wendy Waeni, who accused her former manager Joe Mwangi of denying her proceeds from her performances since 2014, and the Brazilian defender David Luiz, who was signed by Arsenal for £8 million.
Additionally, the billionaire Humphrey Kariuki Ndegwa was searched for after the DCI sought an international arrest warrant against him over a Sh14.5 billion tax evasion case.
The Amazon fires in South America, which intensified in August, were also a trending search query, as well as the Kenyan gospel musician Jimmy Gait, who revealed that he had been misdiagnosed by Kenyan doctors and would have lost his voice if he underwent a throat surgery as advised.
Other trending search queries included the popular American musical fantasy film The Wizard of Oz, which celebrated 80 years, and the former manager of the child star Wendy Waeni, Joe Mwangi, who was issued an arrest warrant for forgery and issuing threats to Wendy's mother.
Furthermore, the 'How to' category saw trending search queries such as how to pay Tala loan, how to check Fuliza limit, and how to make money online, indicating that Kenyans are interested in improving their financial abilities and culinary skills.
