On September 3, 2019, Joe Mwangi, the embattled manager of child star Wendy Waeni, appeared at the Milimani court in a case related to forgery.

Police sought to have Mwangi detained for seven days, alleging that he had forged a letter purporting to be from Interior CS Fred Matiang'i and sent it to the complainant, Magdalene Syombua, in an attempt to intimidate her.

The prosecution claimed that Joe intended to travel to London to evade the jurisdiction of the court.

However, Mwangi's defence argued that his mobile phones were off because he was avoiding numerous messages from unknown people, which made him feel threatened.

Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi directed that Joe Mwangi be detained for 5 days pending investigation.
