On September 2, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrived at Maasai Mara University, just hours after a exposé on Citizen TV revealed a Ksh. 190 million scandal.
According to sources, the detectives spent hours combing through the institution, interrogating Vice Chancellor Prof. Mary Walingo and other university staff for over five hours.
Prof. Walingo's driver, Abdi Noor Hassan, was also spotted in the compound.
The exposé, which was exclusively aired on Citizen TV on Sunday, September 1, 2019, unearthed the looting of public funds from the university.
DCI detectives revealed that they had collected sensitive evidence and would now piece together information gathered from the ground with statements from whistle-blowers who recorded their statements last Friday.
They will determine who will be the main suspects and which other individuals can be State witnesses once the case is taken to court.
Three whistle-blowers have applied for witness protection from the State after being threatened for unearthing the scandal.
